The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will return to Champaign for another household hazardous waste collection for all Illinois residents on April 4.

The event is a “makeup” for an October event that was plagued by bad weather and mismanagement. Despite taking advance registrations, less than half of the registrants were able to drop off their items.

The April drop-off event is once again free and open to all Illinois residents; however, residents must register for an appointment in order to attend. Online registration will open on Monday, Feb. 3 (a specific time was not announced). The link to the online registration system is http://hhwevent.simplybook.me/.

Organizers are asking those people who had an appointment for the October 26, 2019 household hazardous waste event but were unable to drop off items to email recycling@champaignil.gov (or call 217-403-4780) to schedule an appointment for the make-up event on Saturday, April 4, 2020. They will need first and last name, current mailing address, cell number (if available), and a preferred 15-minute time slot between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. (e.g., 8:30 – 8:45 a.m., 8:45 – 9 a.m., etc).

The host site has not yet been announced; when the event was held in October, it was organized at Market Place Shopping Center. The event is returning to the community so soon because only about half of those who registered last time were able to drop off their items; lines were long and there wasn’t enough people to accommodate the expected crowd.

Starting Feb. 3, residents can reserve one of the available 15-minute time slots between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. while space allows. Immediately upon reserving a time, a confirmation email and/or text message will be sent. The resident will also receive a postcard in the U.S. mail five to seven days before the event which serves as their ticket into the event. If residents need assistance registering for the event, they can contact Nichole Millage, Environmental Sustainability Specialist by email at recycling@champaignil.gov or call 217-403-4780. The online registration will remain open until all 15-minute time slots are full.

Residents participating in these events are encouraged to bring chemical cleaners, oil-based paints, thinners, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, kerosene, weed killers, insecticides and pesticides, old or outdated medication, lead-acid batteries, and similar hazardous household products. Fluorescent and other high-intensity discharge lamps may also be brought to the collections. ITEMS NOT ACCEPTED include latex paint, explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, agricultural chemicals and business wastes. A complete list of household hazardous wastes that are and are not accepted is available online here.
